Need a Lift or a Landing? Your Kanna and Kava Guide to the Whole Day

Friday, 6 p.m. The group chat wants a round. You want the round too, just minus the Saturday it usually costs you. Crack a Lychee Blood Orange Uplift Spritz and you get to keep both.

Our kanna and kava lineup runs on two very old plants. Kanna, a South African succulent, brings the lift: a little brighter, a little chattier. Kava, a root from the South Pacific, brings the calm. No alcohol, no THC, so no buzz to manage and nothing to sleep off. (New to both? Our kanna and kava explainer has the backstory.)

Here's how we'd use them, morning to night.

Lift or Calm: Which One Do You Want?

Want a lift? Go kanna: the Uplift Spritzes or Mango Brighter Mood Gummies. Want to take the edge off? Go kava: Blackberry Zinger Unwind Soda or Wild Strawberry Deep Delight Gummies. Cans usually kick in within 15 to 30 minutes and gummies within 30 to 60, so grab a can for right now and a gummy for the part of the day you can see coming.

Happy Hour, Hold the Hangover: Lychee Blood Orange Uplift Spritz

Our newest flavor, and it's been flying out the door since the day it launched. Juicy blood orange up front, floral lychee behind it, lightly sweet, gently fizzy, 20 calories. Inside every can: 50mg of Zembrin kanna, 20mg of kavalactones and 90mg of L-theanine. Pour it over ice into an actual glass and it holds its own next to anything on the bar menu. It comes in eight-packs, which is about the right number for a party. Shop Lychee Blood Orange Uplift Spritz.

Make It a Blood Orange Sunset

Two ingredients and a glass. Fill a coupe or rocks glass with ice, pour in two ounces of fresh orange juice (blood orange if your store has it), top with a can of Lychee Blood Orange Uplift Spritz and stir once. A blood orange wedge on the rim if you're feeling fancy. The juice sinks, the spritz rises, and you get a sunset in a glass in about 30 seconds.

Saturday Errands: Pink Grapefruit Uplift Spritz

Same kanna-forward blend as the lychee (50mg Zembrin kanna, 20mg kavalactones, 90mg L-theanine), with a bright, tart pink grapefruit flavor and 40 calories. This is our Saturday can. Farmers market, hardware store, backyard hang, the fourth load of laundry. It tastes like a sunny afternoon. Shop Pink Grapefruit Uplift Spritz.

The 3 P.M. Wall: Mango Brighter Mood Gummies

You know the one. Inbox full, coffee number three already gone, four hours still to go. Keep a pouch of these in your desk drawer. Each tropical mango gummy pairs 10mg of kanna with 100mg of L-theanine, plus B6 and B12, and it's made to support a positive mood.* Take one after lunch, before the wall shows up. Shop Mango Brighter Mood Gummies.

Tuesday, Mid-Spreadsheet: Wild Strawberry Deep Delight Gummies

Kava for the middle of the week. Each gummy carries 25mg of noble kava root extract, standardized to 97% kavalactones, to help you stay calm and focused* through the long stretch between lunch and five. Shop Wild Strawberry Deep Delight Gummies.

Home, Shoes Off: Blackberry Zinger Unwind Soda

This is the kava-forward can: 100mg of kavalactones, a supporting 15mg of Zembrin kanna and 90mg of L-theanine. Bold blackberry and bright citrus, naturally sweetened. Open one when you walk in the door, put some music on, start dinner. Shop Blackberry Zinger Unwind Soda.

These Plants Have Been Doing Happy Hour for Centuries

People were sharing these plants long before anyone put them in a can. Across the South Pacific, kava has been poured for guests, weddings and peace talks for thousands of years. In Fiji the bowl still goes around with a toast of "Bula," to life. In South Africa, the San and Khoikhoi peoples chewed and brewed kanna to brighten the mood and warm up a gathering.

Quick Questions

Can I have kanna and kava together?

You already are. The Uplift Spritzes lead with kanna and carry a little kava, and the Unwind Soda flips the ratio. Plenty of people open the evening with an Uplift and close it with an Unwind.

Gummy or can?

A can when you want something in your hand: parties, dinners, the dock. A gummy when you want to plan ahead or keep it low-key: work, flights, family reunions.

Where do I start?

Grab the Kanna and Kava Sample Pack. A can of Pink Grapefruit and a can of Blackberry Zinger plus two of each gummy, so you can find your favorite before you buy a case. Doing Sober October? The Brighter Day Bundle pairs Lychee Blood Orange Uplift Spritz with Mango Brighter Mood Gummies for the ordinary Tuesday afternoons when you'd normally reach for a drink.
